About Gary

I decided to become a counselor after working for over 30+ years in the aviation industry as a military and civilian helicopter pilot. I am a retired Marine Corps Veteran and completed my Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Colorado Christian University. I serve as a Licensed Professional Counselor, Associate under the supervision of Doctor Marianne DuMond, LPC-S. During my internship, primarily working with veterans and first responders, I realized my passion for working with the heroes in this great nation who serve others and protect our freedoms. I have a special place in my heart for our military veterans, first responders, mental health/medical professionals, and teachers. It is my honor to serve the men and women who put their lives on the line and give so much of themselves to all of us. I am also extremely passionate and focused on suicide prevention and postvention in our local community and enjoy speaking about these topics to anyone who will listen. I currently serve on the board of Touched by Suicide, lead a suicide loss survivor support group, and am a volunteer with the Denton County LOSS Team.

  • Gottman Method couples therapy is a scientifically-backed, integrative approach to therapy that helps partners improve their connection by enriching friendship, bolstering tools for effective conflict management, and creating shared meaning in their life together.

  • Cognitive processing therapy (CPT) is a specific type of cognitive behavioral therapy that has been effective in reducing symptoms of PTSD that have developed after experiencing a variety of traumatic events including child abuse, combat, rape and natural disasters.

CPT helps patients learn how to challenge and modify unhelpful beliefs related to the trauma. In so doing, the patient creates a new understanding and conceptualization of the traumatic event so that it reduces its ongoing negative effects on current life.

  • Mental Health Stress Management, Suicide Prevention / Postvention education and training.

Approach to therapy

I approach the therapeutic relationship from an integrative perspective viewing each person as uniquely created with individual experiences, goals, challenges, hopes, and dreams. My foundation is person-centered, and I place primary emphasis on creating and developing a therapeutic alliance. I believe it is of utmost importance to create a safe, open, and honest environment to foster a professional relationship built on trust. My focus leans towards the realms of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) informed by trauma, attachment, narrative, existential and reality. I also see the importance of how each person’s individual life experience or narrative has influenced who they are today. From this perspective we gain insight into where we came from and can focus on where we want to go. I look forward to hearing your story and working together in a therapeutic alliance to discover paths to growth and healing.
